Poldark 2017

Clash of Futures finished. Poldark 4 turned up. I guess they liked what we did on Poldark 3. I got a new assistant, ( Poppy went to look after Caroline, a lead, so I got someone new, Kelsey, who had just finished doing amazing prosthetics on Relic) More locations, more rain, more making wigs, ( less prosthetics this time) but still a lovely chance to be creative. The montage is from Season 3, – can’t show you season 4, has not gone to air yet.

set in the time between the wars.

Poldark season 3 done. Ok, what now. I thought I had a film, didn’t. I thought I would do Garsington opera. Couldn’t. So was musing about what to do on Facebook when a friend from Luxembourg got in touch and said, come help with this tv series about the back story of people who’s lives got tied up in  WW2. Key hair turned into Designer when the Designer broke her arm in a car accident. 5 weeks turned into 11. Nice period though. Who knew they have their own language in Luxembourg ?.

Poldark,… hmm, not a natural fit for someone with a theatre/fantasy flair,.. but Pippa Woods, young and brilliant,  asked me to run the crowd room. A first, and then  said I trust you, and you will get to be creative, and as we have two weeks in A french prison with wounds and illness’s , I will show you how to make and apply prosthetics ( which lets be honest is not my strong point…) What more can you ask for ?. So I packed up my wigs and moved too Bristol. For six months. In winter. I can’t show you pictures yet, it hasn’t gone to air,… but we have all been asked back, so I guess they liked what we did.

I am throwing this in, because after a while you get bored of looking at elves and hobbits,…which is what I pretty much did for three years. But this is the kind of thing I would ( almost) pay money to do……..sigh.

this is my first attempt with the Flounder head dress… I love it because it shows the headdress in motion.

upstairs downstairsMuch excitment, Pippa called – we are on the cover of the Radio Times !, three newsagents later I finally found a copy,..I kept staring at it, and was desperate to tell someone,.. but no-one in the shop cared, or they would have thought I was nuts. It was lovely to see everyone when we did the actual shoot,.. but there was no promise where or even if it would be used,…so to score the Radio Times was great,.. and very proud I am too.

johnny englshHave settled back into London,..and been asked to help out on the Johnny English Re-Born,… it’s a sequel,..I am looking after the “killer cleaner” – Graeme Johnston is designing, it’s modern day, but when I am not doing my principal, I am in the crowd room doing sleek MI5 types,.. all good,.. even if the locations are a bit cold.

upstairs downstairsThe last month of Upstairs downstairs,…three months in Wales, and I have really enjoyed it. The city is manageable size wise, the cast and crew have been really very nice, Adam Suschitzky and his team did a stunning job of lighting our stunning hair do’s and make-ups, the set looks gorgeous – the art department have out done themselves, and a cab home at night is only about ten pounds – what more can you ask for. The sad thing about this sort of job is you live in each others heads and pockets, and suddenly you all have to go home again. Everyone will have to watch it so it will go to series next year…..

wales_continuesSo this is Cardiff,…. hmmm well the weather is good,..and I have to say the 1930’s is a pretty period,… I have spent quite a few hours looking at, and thinking through, all the references Christine had found,….I thought I was going to get away with not having to do finger waves, but then Anne Reid who is playing Mrs Thackery produced a picture of her mum, 1936, “Would it be possible for me to look like that ?…..Christine said yes,… and I knew I was looking at 3 months of working on my waves,… good practice, and Anne was great fun to talk too, especially when we found out we had a similar private passion, – musical theatre !.
